Pirates Split Pair

It was the Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at Memorial on Sunday afternoon in the guise of the Pirates.

GAME ONE- DODGERS

The Pirates (Dr. Jekyll) won Game One 4-2.  A Dodger HR and double plated one in the first and a pair of errors led to a Dodger unearned run in the fourth as John Denny went the distance.  The Dodgers managed a total of six hits.  they left  runners in scoring position in the first (second base with two outs- score on the HR), second (first and second with one out), third (first and second with one out), fourth (second and third with no outs- one scored), and fifth (second with two outs).

The Pirates tied it in the first after loading the bases- Jose Cubero reached on an error and Bill Keeling and Scotty Irish singled.  Jose scored on a double play.  John singled in the second and was stranded.  In the third, Chris Gregory was hit by a pitch but died at third after a pair of steals.  In the fourth the Pirates put two on with one out- Juan Ortiz reached on an error and stole second and Leo Brown walked.

After the Dodgers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, the Pirates tied it again in the bottom.  Chris walked, stole second and third again and scored on a passed ball.

In the sixth Dustin Stover walked with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Leo singled and Dustin went to third.  Leo stole second and both he and Dustin scored on John's double into the left-center gap.

The Game ended with John striking out the side in the seventh.

GAME TWO- THUNDER

The Pirates (Mr. Hyde) seemed worn out n Game Two.  The Dodgers had two hits but scored none when Dustin Stover relayed Chris Gregory's throw from the wall in center to Juan Ortiz at the plate for the put-out.  Like the third day for the Confederates at Gettysburg, this would be the high water mark for the Pirates.

In the Pirate half, singles by Scotty Irish and Jose Cubero were wasted.  By the time the Pirates scored in the third, the score was 6-1.  John Denney singled in second but was erased on a double play.  Charlie Gabriel singled in the third but the Pirate score once again came after a Chris Gregory walk, stolen bases and a wild pitch.

The Thunder made it 10-1 in the fourth and 12-1 going to the bottom of the fifth.  John singled and Leo Brown walked and both advanced on a wild pitch.  John Denny scored on a ground out by Brent Bonte.

In the sixth and seventh, the Pirates could manage only a sixth inning walk to Scotty.  Walks, singles, errors, and a hit batter cost the Pirates eight runs and a disappointing 20-2 final.
