Boys -

It's official we will play Sunday July 1st at 10:00 a.m.!
Due to the heat this is the best we can do to protect us and not cancel game.
I know this will be a problem for a couple guys but the majority agreed they could make the new time.

We play the Red Sox and Jose will be on the hill at Clarksville Little League field.
I'm to remind you, no beer!  See you at Value City after the game!

Also be aware if you are coming up or down I-65 it is bad!  I mean real bad.
Find another way to the field.

Pirates Win Third Straight

The visiting Pirates beat the Colonels Tuesday night in a sloppily played game.  The final score was 17-5 and was called after six innings on the run rule.

The Pirates scored four unearned runs in the first without an RBI.  Jose Cubero singled to lead off the game, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error by the Colonel catcher.  Chris Gregory followed with a single, stole second and scored from second when the attempt to throw him out went into center field.  Jackson Nave singled, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on an error on  John Denney’s ground ball.  Bobby Blair followed with a single, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on an error.

The Colonels answered with two unearned runs of their own off of John Denney.  Errors allowed the first three batters to reach base.  A sacrifice fly scored one run and the second scored on a single, the only hit of the inning.  The score after one was 4-2.

Neither team scored in the second.  Charlie Gabriel singled but was doubled off on a hit and run fly out.  The Colonels managed only a one out single.

In the third, singles by Jackson and Juan Ortiz and a triple by John Denney produced the first earned runs of the game.  Bobby’s sacrifice fly drove in John.  Brent Bronte was hit by a pitch and he scored on consecutive singles by Scotty Irish and Leo Brown.  The Colonels added two unearned runs of their own in the bottom.  A one out single and an outfield error on the play put a runner on second.  An infield error had Colonels on the corner.  A single to right drove in the runner from third, but on the play, the runner from first was thrown out at third Leo to Scotty to David Stierle.  A come-backer to John ended the inning.  Score: 8-4.

The Pirates scored five in the fourth.  Chris tripled.  Jackson drove him in with a single (his third hit).  After a stolen base, Jackson scored on Juan’s single.  After a ground out, singles by Bobby, Brent (RBI), Scotty (RBI) and Leo made the score 13-4.  The Colonels failed to score after Chris ran down a drive to deep right center by the lead-off batter.

The Pirates made it 14-4 in the fifth on singles by Chris, Jackson (his fourth), and Juan, and an RBI walk to John.  An infield error allowed the Colonels’ only base runner.

In the sixth, Scotty, Leo and David loaded the bases with singles and all three scored .  The final run scored on Jackson’s fifth hit of the game.

John finished his complete game win, giving up an unearned run in the sixth for a final score of 17-5.  John gave up only six hits but zero earned runs.  Offensively the Pirates had 22 hits.

Dustin Report

Just wanted to update everyone and thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

I had my gall bladder removed early Monday morning.  I am now back at my dad's house for a day or two.  Then I am going to be making the drive back from Oklahoma to Kentucky.

I feel pretty good - not too sore at all.

Keep up the winning as I am looking forward to getting back on the field as soon as I am cleared by the doctors if not sooner.

Take care,

Dustin

Guys -

A GREAT team effort getting the Win yesterday.  David great job on the hill - 27 batters, 1 run on 4 hits, 2 walks, 4 strike outs and a excellent defensive efforts behind you and behind the dish!

Now, lets take that same effort to the Colonels and make it 3 in-a-row on Tuesday night at Shawnee at 7:00 pm.  I have Woody, Hopper and Stover not able to attend game and Porta there as soon as he can.  John Denney will take the hill for us!

Guys, last night Dustin contacted me and informed me he was in the ER wherever he is in Oklahoma.  He said he was diagnosed with a gall bladder issue and they were going to operate - like now.  So he was going to return to us this week, not tomorrow night but by Sunday.  Obviously, he is going to be on the mend and will get him back when he is "healed up and haired over". Please keep a good thought for our teammate and when I know more I will pass it on.

Again, good game.  See you tomorrow night.

David Porta Tosses Four Hitter

David Porta tossed a complete game, seven inning, four hitter Sunday afternoon at Shawnee to pace the Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the Senators.

Dave Porta works in the first.

The Pirates staked Dave to a 1-0 lead in the second after stranding Chris Gregory on third (after stealing second and third) in the first.  Chris had reached base on a fielder's choice after Brian Hooper had walked.  Jackson Nave led off the second and reached base on a hit by pitch and advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on Bobbie Blair's single.  Scotty Irish drove Jackson in with single.

After retiring the first eight batters, Dave gave up a one out double in the third.  A ground out second to first (Bill Keeling to Jackson) moved the runner to third.  A single drove in the Senators only run of the game.  Another single and a throwing error put runners on the corners before the inning was closed out.

In the fourth, a two out single and an error were erased by a ground out to third (Brent Bronte to Jackson).  In the fifth Dave walked the lead off batter, his first walk of the day.  After a conference on the mound, Brent ran down a foul ball near the boundary fence and almost threw out the runner returning to first.  Three pitches later, a line drive to Brent resulted in a double play on the throw to Jackson.

Brent fields at third and ...
throws out the runner to Jackson at first.

A two out walk in the sixth was all the Senators could manage and the score after five and a half was 1-1.

The Pirates squandered several chances after their score in the second. In the third, Bill Keeling and Jose Cubero  singled and Jose stole third.  But a pop out and a ground out ended the threat.  In the fourth after two outs, Brent and Bobbie singled and Scotty walked but all three were left on base.

In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, John Denney singled.  Chris went in to run for John and stole second and third.  Jackson followed and struck out on a ball in the dirt.  The catcher attempted to throw out Chris at third but the throw was late and the Pirates had runners on the corners.  Brent singled to left, scoring Chris and the Pirates led 2-1.

In the seventh, Dave struck out the lead off batter and the next two batters flew out to Bill at second to preserve the 2-1 victory.

Dave gave up the four hits, two walks and struck out six.  Twenty of twenty one outs were recorded by infielders.  The one exception was one of three five star defensive plays.  The catch by Brent was one.  A sliding catch of a foul fly by Jackson was one.  The out field put out was a catch by Jose after a long run at the foot of the left field fence.

The Pirates' record improved to 4-2.

Pirates Rally for Come-from-behind Win

The Pirates came from behind with a huge last inning to defeat the Thunder Tuesday night at Memorial Park.

The visiting Pirates scored first when Jose Cubero doubled and Brian Hooper walked to open the game.  Passed balls allowed Jose to score and Brian to move to third before John Denney drove Brian home with a single.  After a ground out (Bobby Blair at short to Jackson Nave at first) the Thunder could not capitalize on a lead-off single as the Pirates turned a 6-4-3 double play (Bobby to David Stierle to Jackson).

Jose doubles to lead-off the game.

The Pirates failed to score in the second, stranding Leo Brown after a two out walk.  The Thunder tied the game with a no out two run home run to left center field off Jose.

The Pirates went three up three down in the third; the Thunder was unable to score in spite of putting two men on with none out.  But a pair of strike outs and a fielder’s choice to Brent Bronte, unassisted, at third killed the threat.

In the fourth, the Pirates increased their lead to 3-2.  Chris Gregory walked stole second and third and scored on a passed ball.  Brent singled but was left on base.

The Thunder took their first lead of the game when two walks and an error contributed to a two run fourth and a 4-3 Thunder lead.

A lead-off walk to Leo and a Juan Ortiz single failed to produce a run in the fifth and the score remained 4-3 going to the Pirates’ last at bat in the sixth.

But, after a lead-off ground out, the next eleven Pirates reached base and scored.  The inning included, in order, singles by Chris, Jackson, and John; a fielder’s choice by Bobby (with no out due to a throwing error); a double by Brent; singles by Leo, David Porta and Scotty Irish; a walk to Juan Ortiz; a reached on error by David Stierle; and a walk to Jose.  Chris also drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Jackson added his second single of the inning.

In the bottom of the inning and trailing 14 - 4, the Thunder put their first two batters on off John Denney who had come on in relief in the fifth.  The runners advanced to second and third on a ground out to second, David Stierle to David Porta.  The next at bat produced a run when the runner on third scored on an error.  On the play, the runner from second attempted to score but was thrown out at the plate, Chris to Scotty.  And when the batter attempted to move up on the throw to the plate, he was cut down, Scotty to Bobby to end the game.  The final score was 14-5.

The Pirates’ record improved to 3-2.  The victory was their second come from behind win of the season.

Damn Mother Nature!

She won yesterday.  Hope all the Dad's had a great day yesterday.  Honestly, I didn't because I wanted to play baseball.  But settled for a Reds baseball and U S Open and steak and Rock of Ages!  Dang that was a pretty busy day.  Good thing I didn't play ball I would never got that all in.

Yesterday's rain out is going to be played on August 19th at this point.  Same time and same place so mark it on your calendars.  Dave S, if you can change the blog to reflect and if it changes again we'll make it happen when it happens.

Tomorrow night we play the Thunder at Memorial at 7:00 p.m.  Since we were not together yesterday other than Dustin who's on vacation and Charlie who is still on the mend is there anyone else who is not going to make the game?  Please let me know asap.

Otherwise, I will see all the rest of you scurvy dogs in the dugout.  Jose will take the hill for the start.

Go Pirates!

PIRATES LOSE TO ORIOLES

The Pirates dropped a 13-3 decision to the Orioles Thursday evening at Shawnee.  The Pirates record fell to 2-2 with both loses being to the Orioles.

The visiting Orioles scored three times in the first.  A pair of walks, a pair of stolen bases and a double plated the first two runs.  After David Porta struck out the next batter a double drove in the third run of the inning.  Bill Keeling (2b) threw the next batter out at first (John Denney) and the third out was a fly out to Brian Hooper in right.

The Pirates were retired in order in the first.

The Orioles added a run in the second on a hit batter and two singles.  The three outs were all infield outs- a ground out and pop up to John and a ground out, Bill to John.

A John Denny single was wasted when an interference on the base paths was called, resulting in a double play.

The Orioles kept the pressure on in the third when a single, HPB, double and a couple of ground outs resulted in three more runs and a 7-0 lead.  Scotty Irish opened the bottom with a single but back to back fielder choices and a fly out left the Pirates scoreless.

The Orioles scored one in the fourth on a lead off single, walk and, after a fly out to Chris Gregory in center, an RBI single.  Bobby Blair came on in relief with two on.  He loaded the bases with a HPB.  After a K, an infield single drove in the second run of the inning before a fly out to Dave Porta at third ended the inning with the bases still loaded.  The Pirates broke though with two in the bottom.  Brian singled and two outs later was joined on base by Bobby (single) and Bill (walk).   Scotty’s second hit of the game scored two.  After four the score was 9-2.

The Orioles failed to score in the fifth.  A strike out, fly out to Chris and a come-backer stranded a walk and a single.  Likewise, for the Pirates, Brian was left on base after a single.

The Orioles made it 10-2 with a walk and two singles in the sixth.  The Pirates failed to score after loading the bases with only one out. (Singles by Bobby, Bill and Scotty, his third.)

In the seventh, the Orioles put five men on and scored three.  The Pirates added one (Chris singled, advanced to second on an error on a pick-off try and stole third, scoring on John’s single.)  The final was 13-3

PIRATES IMPROVE TO 2 - 1

After falling behind 3-0, taking a 5-3 lead, and trailing 8-5 after 6-1/2 innings, the Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 9-8 time limit victory over the Thunder Sunday afternoon at Clarksville field.

John Denny works in the second.

The Thunder opened the scoring in the first with an unearned run against John Denney.  They added two unearned runs in the second.

In the second inning the Pirates threatened to score when Juan Ortiz and Jackson Nave singled and Dustin Stover walked to load the bases.  But a line drive double play and a fly out left the score at 3-0.

Dustin goes into the hole for the first out in the first.

In the third, a double, single and an infield single with one out filled the bases for the Thunder.  But Dustin (shortstop) threw a runner out at the plate (Scotty Ireland, C) and Bill Keeling (2B) ended the threat with an assist to Jackson (1B).  In the bottom of the third, Chris Gregory was stranded on third after a two out triple.

Brent fields at third.

The Pirates took the lead in the fourth.  Jose Cubero singled; Juan walked; Jackson reached on an error; Dustin singled, driving in Jose; and John cleared the bases (3 RBI) with a double to left center; all with no outs.  Bill ended the scoring with an RBI single.  He and Chris (single) were left on base.  After four the Pirates led 5-3.

Jose in short left field.

The Thunder cut the lead to 5-4 in the fifth with their fourth unearned run of the game.  But they could only push across one even  though they touched John for three singles and one error.  In the bottom of the inning, John was stranded at third after a single, passed ball, and throwing error.

John was lifted in the sixth with the Pirates leading 5-4.  The Thunder opened the sixth with a walk.  The runner moved to second on a balk, to third on a wild pitch and was joined on base by another walk.  The runner on third scored on a wild pitch with the runner on first advancing all the way to third.  After an infield single put runners at first and third, the next batter produced the first out, 1 to 3 (Bobby Blair to Jackson).  A walk loaded the bases and a walk to the next batter produced a second run.  Brent Bronte moved to the mound and the first batter hit a ground ball to Dustin who threw the runner from third out at the plate (to Scotty).  A walk closed out the scoring for the Thunder with the third out coming on a fielder’s choice to Bobby unassisted at third.

The Pirates were looking at an 8-5 deficit with time running out.  The seventh opened with David Stierle walking and Scotty being hit by a pitch.  With one out, Brent walked to load the bases.  Jose drove in a run with a single to make the score 8-6.  But RBI walks to Juan, Jackson and Justin gave the Pirates a 9-8 win.

PIRATES BLANK DODGERS

Jose Cubero pitched a seven inning complete game shut out Tuesday evening against the Dodgers (visitors) in a 8-0 win that evened the Pirates' record at 1-1.

In the 1st, after a lead-off strike out the Dodgers put a runner on with single.  A fielders choice [Brent Bonte (third) to David Stierle (second)] left a runner on first.  A walk put runners at first and second.  But a ground ball to Brent at third resulted in a tag out of the runner for the third out.

The Pirates struck in the bottom of the inning.  Jose walked and Brent was hit by a pitch.  After each stole a base.  A one out ground out by Jackson Nave scored Jose for a 1-0 lead.

The Dodgers threatened in the 2nd.  A lead-off single was erased in a 5-4-3 double play (Brent to David to Jackson).  A single and a walk were stranded on a strike out.

In the bottom half, Bobby Blair doubled, Juan Ortiz singled and Leo Brown doubled driving in Bobby.  After an out David reached on a HBP to load the bases.  A passed ball allowed Juan to score and a bad throw from the catcher allowed Leo to score with David winding up on third.  After two innings, the Pirates lead 4-0.

In the 3rd, an error allowed a Dodger base runner but no scoring.  The Pirates added one in the bottom.  Brent and Chris Gregory walked with Brent scoring when Jackson singled. (5-0)

The Dodgers manged only a lead-off single in the 4th while the Pirates added three runs.  Juan singled and  Leo and Scotty Irish walked to load the bases with Juan scoring on a passed ball.  Jose cleared the bases with a single and the final score of 8-0.

The Dodgers had threats in the 6th and 7th but both were erased by double plays, 1-2-3 (Jose to Scotty to Jackson) and 4-6-3 (David to Bobby to Jackson).

Pirates Drop Opener

The Pirates (visitors) dropped a 5-2 decision to the defending Champion Orioles (home) in the season opener Sunday at Memorial.

After the Pirates went down in order in the first against Adam Crawford, the Orioles scored four runs on only one hit in the bottom of the inning.  After a lead-off walk, an error on a potential double play ball put runners on first and second.  After both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch, the bases were loaded by another walk.  The Orioles scored a run on wild pitch (1-0) before the bases were loaded again when the next batter was hit by a pitch.  A single drove in two runs (3-0) and left runners at first and third.  The scoring for the inning was closed out with a run scoring on a ground out to Bill Keeling at second base (4-0).  A walk preceded a pop out to Bill at second and a foul out to Scotty Irish behind home plate.

In the second, the Pirates got their first base runner on Jackson Nave's single, but he was stranded at first.

In the bottom of the inning, after a lead-off walk, an ill Dustin Stover had to come out of the game and John Deeney came on in relief.  After a fly out to Leo Brown in right, a single put runners on first and second, but there was no damage as the next two batters resulted in outs (a Bobby Blair (third base) to Bill Keeling fielders choice and a pop out to Brian Hooper at Short).

In the third Juan Ortiz's single was wasted and the Orioles added another unearned run (their third of the game).  The Oriole lead off flew out to Chris Gregory in center.  But an Oriole double produced a run when the runner was able to score on a single and an out field error on the play (5-0).

Neither team scored in the fourth but the Orioles threatened when a one out single, infield error and wild pitch put runners on second and third before a strike out and a come backer to John Denney ended the threat,

In the fifth, the Pirates failed to drive in John Denney after his two out double.  The Orioles loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning with none out on three straight singles.  But a pop out to Brian at short and a double play on a fly out to Jose Cubero in left with a throw to Bobby Blair at third killed the threat.

The Pirates got on the board in the sixth.  Bill Keeling doubled, advanced to third on David Stierle's ground out to second, and scored on a wild pitch (5-1).  Leo walked but was stranded at first.  The Orioles failed to capitalize on a lead-off infield error.

The Pirates added a run in the seventh.  Chris Gregory singled and advanced to second on an error in right field,  On his steal of third, a catcher's throwing error allowed him to score (5-2).  Scotty Irish was stranded at first after his one out single.

Neither team threatened the rest of the way.

The Pirates play the Dodgers Tuesday night (7:00 pm) at memorial.
