Pirates Win Third Straight

The visiting Pirates beat the Colonels Tuesday night in a sloppily played game.  The final score was 17-5 and was called after six innings on the run rule.

The Pirates scored four unearned runs in the first without an RBI.  Jose Cubero singled to lead off the game, stole second and third and scored on a throwing error by the Colonel catcher.  Chris Gregory followed with a single, stole second and scored from second when the attempt to throw him out went into center field.  Jackson Nave singled, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on an error on  John Denney’s ground ball.  Bobby Blair followed with a single, moved to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on an error.

The Colonels answered with two unearned runs of their own off of John Denney.  Errors allowed the first three batters to reach base.  A sacrifice fly scored one run and the second scored on a single, the only hit of the inning.  The score after one was 4-2.

Neither team scored in the second.  Charlie Gabriel singled but was doubled off on a hit and run fly out.  The Colonels managed only a one out single.

In the third, singles by Jackson and Juan Ortiz and a triple by John Denney produced the first earned runs of the game.  Bobby’s sacrifice fly drove in John.  Brent Bronte was hit by a pitch and he scored on consecutive singles by Scotty Irish and Leo Brown.  The Colonels added two unearned runs of their own in the bottom.  A one out single and an outfield error on the play put a runner on second.  An infield error had Colonels on the corner.  A single to right drove in the runner from third, but on the play, the runner from first was thrown out at third Leo to Scotty to David Stierle.  A come-backer to John ended the inning.  Score: 8-4.

The Pirates scored five in the fourth.  Chris tripled.  Jackson drove him in with a single (his third hit).  After a stolen base, Jackson scored on Juan’s single.  After a ground out, singles by Bobby, Brent (RBI), Scotty (RBI) and Leo made the score 13-4.  The Colonels failed to score after Chris ran down a drive to deep right center by the lead-off batter.

John finished his complete game win, giving up an unearned run in the sixth for a final score of 17-5.  John gave up only six hits but zero earned runs.  Offensively the Pirates had 22 hits.
