PIRATES LOSE TO ORIOLES

The Pirates dropped a 13-3 decision to the Orioles Thursday evening at Shawnee.  The Pirates record fell to 2-2 with both loses being to the Orioles.

The visiting Orioles scored three times in the first.  A pair of walks, a pair of stolen bases and a double plated the first two runs.  After David Porta struck out the next batter a double drove in the third run of the inning.  Bill Keeling (2b) threw the next batter out at first (John Denney) and the third out was a fly out to Brian Hooper in right.

The Pirates were retired in order in the first.

The Orioles added a run in the second on a hit batter and two singles.  The three outs were all infield outs- a ground out and pop up to John and a ground out, Bill to John.

A John Denny single was wasted when an interference on the base paths was called, resulting in a double play.

The Orioles kept the pressure on in the third when a single, HPB, double and a couple of ground outs resulted in three more runs and a 7-0 lead.  Scotty Irish opened the bottom with a single but back to back fielder choices and a fly out left the Pirates scoreless.

The Orioles scored one in the fourth on a lead off single, walk and, after a fly out to Chris Gregory in center, an RBI single.  Bobby Blair came on in relief with two on.  He loaded the bases with a HPB.  After a K, an infield single drove in the second run of the inning before a fly out to Dave Porta at third ended the inning with the bases still loaded.  The Pirates broke though with two in the bottom.  Brian singled and two outs later was joined on base by Bobby (single) and Bill (walk).   Scotty’s second hit of the game scored two.  After four the score was 9-2.

The Orioles failed to score in the fifth.  A strike out, fly out to Chris and a come-backer stranded a walk and a single.  Likewise, for the Pirates, Brian was left on base after a single.

The Orioles made it 10-2 with a walk and two singles in the sixth.  The Pirates failed to score after loading the bases with only one out. (Singles by Bobby, Bill and Scotty, his third.)

In the seventh, the Orioles put five men on and scored three.  The Pirates added one (Chris singled, advanced to second on an error on a pick-off try and stole third, scoring on John’s single.)  The final was 13-3
