Latest From Leo- 8/29

Guys -

If you are interested in playing Fall Ball please let me know.  I'm not putting a "Pirate" team together unless we get a majority.  Not sure of cost.  Supposed to start at end of September. May play on Tuesday, Weds., or Thurs (one of those nights) and Sunday.  Not sure if games are at Shawnee or Thurman Hutchins or both or someplace else.

Sorry that's all I know.  Not much but first and foremost who wants to play Fall Ball.  Also if you have sons, nephews, or someone we want to recruit this is a good opportunity to get them out and see what league is about.

Thanks

Leo

Pirates, Red Sox Draw in Second Place Match-up

In a one-game playoff between the second place team of the Fleur De Lis Division and the second place team of the Bluegrass Division, , the Red Sox and the Pirates fought to a 10-10 tie at the end of the six innings when the game was called by expiration of the time limit.

The visiting Sox opened the game in the first against Dave Porta, working his first start after missing over a month with an injury, by breaking on top with four runs.  The lead off batter struck out on pitch in the dirt but the batter reached base.  The second batter singled but the advanced to second on an error and runner scored.  After a strike out and a walk, the next batter hit a fly ball to short right which fell in.  A  throw to second seemingly forced the runner advancing from first.  But the field umpire, after the end of the play, ruled the play an infield fly and the batter was out, a run scored and runners was left on second..  An error and a single plated the third and fourth runs of the inning before Bill  Keeling threw out a runner to John Denny at first.

The Pirates took advantage of sloppy play by the Sox to cut the Sox lead in half.  Leo Brown reached first when the third strike got away.  Juan Ortiz's hustle forced an errant throw and Dustin Stover's slide into first beat the first baseman to the bag to load the bases.  A walk to Bobby Blair drove in a run and John Denney's fielder's choice scored the other.

The Sox went three up three down in the second- Dave's third K, a pop out to Bill and a 5-3 ground out, Bobby to John.

The Pirates made it 4-3 in the bottom as Chris Gregory walked, stole second and third and scored on a Sox error.

An error allowed the only Sox runner in the top half of the third.  A fly out to Leo in left, a 5-4 fielder's choice (Bobby to Bill) and a 6-3 ground out (Dustin to John) stranded the runner.  The Pirates wasted Bill's single in the bottom half.

Dave's fourth and fifth strike outs started the fourth and another Dustin to John ground out put the Sox down in order.

The Pirates then took the lead.  John reached on an error and David Stierle singled.  Brent Bonte reached on a fielder's choice with David out at second and John advancing to third.  Chris walked to load the bases.  Charlie Gabriel reached on an error with a run scoring and Leo drove in one with a single and another scoring on an error on the play.  The score after four was 6-4.

Both teams added runs in the fifth.  The Sox got three.  A single, fielder's choice (Dave to Bill), single and walk loaded the bases, and a double off of a pitch well out of the strike zone cleared the bases and made the score 7-6.  Two more singles made it 8-6.  The other Sox outs was another 6-3 ground out (Dustin to David at first) and Dave's sixth K.

The Pirates retook the lead with three of their own.  Juan singled and stole second.  Dustin walked but was forced at second as Bobby reached on a fielder's choice.  John Denney drove in two with a single and David drove in the third with a single.  The Sox got out of the inning trailing 9-8 after a stolen base by David and a walk to Brent.

In the sixth the Red Sox regained the lead.  After a lead off walk, a single and a sacrifice (Dave to John) put runners on second and third.  The next batter singled to center with the runner from third scoring.  But the runner from second was cut down by a one hop strike from Chris to Juan.  The Sox added the go ahead run on another hit before Dave recorded his seventh strike out.

Trailing 10-9, the Pirates opened the inning (the last since time had run out) with a double by Bill.  A single by Juan drove in Bill to tie the score.  Juan stole second went to third on Dustin's single.  Dustin stole to put Pirates at second and third with no outs.  After a strike out, John was walked to load the bases.  But a comebacker to the pitcher resulted in a 1-2-3 double play and a 10-10 tie game result.

Whew!  Boys, I don't know about you, but I'm flat tuckered out!  Memo to file - NEVER PLAY DOUBLE HEADERS AGAIN!!!!

Tomorrow Tuesday August 28th is are final game for the 2012 season.  As you know, we are playing the Red Sox at 7:00 pm at Memorial Park.  Rain is in the forecast!  So we'll see what Mother Nature throws at us.

In the last note I mentioned the possibility of wearing white uniforms.  We will not, I repeat will not wear whites.  We'll stick with the Gold and gray uniforms that got us this far this season.

Too, I would ask everyone to be there Tuesday - this will be the last chance we can take a team picture.  If you don't make it we will either photoshop you or you won't be in it!

Fall Ball - Anyone interested in fall ball?  I am not planning on a "Pirates" team unless their is a majority of interest.  Not sure of details but will find out and follow up tomorrow night or in email.

All Star Weekend - Oct. 13th & 14th

There is a Father & Son game, Home Run and hitting skills on the Saturday Oct. 13th.
The All Star game is on Sunday Oct. 14th and will pit the All Stars from the Bluegrass division against the Fluer De Lis division.
I've been allowed three selections from our squad.  This is always tough and I want to be able to select more than three!  So with that I've chosen Jose Cubero, Scotty Irish and David Stierle to represent the Pirates in the All Star game.

Ok guys, we're beat up, aching, hurting and generally not feeling great!  Let's get ready to take it to the Red Sox!  At the end of the day when all is said and done - we still get to play baseball!  See tomorrow.

Pirates Split Pair

It was the Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde at Memorial on Sunday afternoon in the guise of the Pirates.

GAME ONE- DODGERS

The Pirates (Dr. Jekyll) won Game One 4-2.  A Dodger HR and double plated one in the first and a pair of errors led to a Dodger unearned run in the fourth as John Denny went the distance.  The Dodgers managed a total of six hits.  they left  runners in scoring position in the first (second base with two outs- score on the HR), second (first and second with one out), third (first and second with one out), fourth (second and third with no outs- one scored), and fifth (second with two outs).

The Pirates tied it in the first after loading the bases- Jose Cubero reached on an error and Bill Keeling and Scotty Irish singled.  Jose scored on a double play.  John singled in the second and was stranded.  In the third, Chris Gregory was hit by a pitch but died at third after a pair of steals.  In the fourth the Pirates put two on with one out- Juan Ortiz reached on an error and stole second and Leo Brown walked.

After the Dodgers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, the Pirates tied it again in the bottom.  Chris walked, stole second and third again and scored on a passed ball.

In the sixth Dustin Stover walked with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Leo singled and Dustin went to third.  Leo stole second and both he and Dustin scored on John's double into the left-center gap.

The Game ended with John striking out the side in the seventh.

GAME TWO- THUNDER

The Pirates (Mr. Hyde) seemed worn out n Game Two.  The Dodgers had two hits but scored none when Dustin Stover relayed Chris Gregory's throw from the wall in center to Juan Ortiz at the plate for the put-out.  Like the third day for the Confederates at Gettysburg, this would be the high water mark for the Pirates.

In the Pirate half, singles by Scotty Irish and Jose Cubero were wasted.  By the time the Pirates scored in the third, the score was 6-1.  John Denney singled in second but was erased on a double play.  Charlie Gabriel singled in the third but the Pirate score once again came after a Chris Gregory walk, stolen bases and a wild pitch.

The Thunder made it 10-1 in the fourth and 12-1 going to the bottom of the fifth.  John singled and Leo Brown walked and both advanced on a wild pitch.  John Denny scored on a ground out by Brent Bonte.

In the sixth and seventh, the Pirates could manage only a sixth inning walk to Scotty.  Walks, singles, errors, and a hit batter cost the Pirates eight runs and a disappointing 20-2 final.

Well boys -

Just like in fishing we let the big one get away from us last night!  That's baseball.  Guys, we play two on Sunday.  The weather looks good and its gonna be hot and we need all "hands on deck"!  Both games we will be home team, both are wood bat, both will be 7 inning affairs.  So bring extra water, some snacks to keep up energy and lots of game day attitude.  The first game is against the Dodgers and the second game is the Thunder.  John will get the start against the Dodgers and Jose will have the hill for the Thunder.

As of today, I know that David Porta and Brian are done for the season!  Out of 15 that takes us to 13.  Jackson is done for season as well, his new General Manager's position has him dedicated to getting his store open and it coincides with the end of our season.  Good luck to Jackson and hopefully he can make a game but understand career first.  That makes 12.  Bobby will not be there Sunday he is out of town visiting family - family, career, baseball.  Bobby we'll see you next Tuesday when we play the Red Sox.  Now we are 11, assuming all others will be there on Sunday.  Keep in mind, Charlie is nursing and dealing with a heal problem and Scotty is pretty banged up but hanging in there.

Next Tuesday August 28th at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial we will play the Red Sox in a one game "bronze metal" game!  Don't ask me why, it is, what it is.  Again, as I mentioned last night.  I have David P, John and Bobby asking around about getting a "hired gun" to sign a one day contract to start against the Red Sox and turn the tables on them!  However, I'm confident that the remainder of our crippled, ailing, aging Pirate team can do this on our own and without any help.

I'd also like to have a team photo taken on Tuesday since this will be our last game of the season.  Can I ask that all be available (even injured) to be at park so we can take said photo.  I'm also thinking for the final game of season that we wear the "white uniforms" to change things up.

See you on Sunday!

Jets Outlast Pirates

The Fleur De Lis Division Champions Jets used a three run seventh inning to beat the Pirates 10-8 Tuesday Night.

The Jets struck quickly in the top of the first with a lead-off single, a pair of stolen bases and and an RBI single off starter Bobby Blair.  The Pirates failed to answer, stranding Jose Cubero (single) and Chris Gregory (walk).

The Jets made it 3-0 in the second with back to back lead-off doubles, a stolen base and a sac fly.  A pair of ground outs to short (David Stierle to Leo Brown) ended the inning.  The Pirates matched those two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Bobby singled and was sacrificed to second by Leo.  Brent Bonte drove Bobby in with a single.  Brent stole second and scored moved to third on a single by David.  When Brian Hooper reached first on a passed ball on a strick out, re-injuring his shoulder in the process, Brent came in to score.  After two it was 3-2 Jets.

The Jets pushed across their fourth run after a pair of lead off walks in the third. With one in and two on a line drive to Leo at first, a ground out Bobby to Leo, and a fly out to Chris in center put out the fire.

The Pirates took their first lead.  Scotty Irish singled; Bill Keeling walked and both scored on John Denney's double- safe at second on a hook slide away from the tag.  Bobby walked but both he and John were left on.  the Pirates led 5-4.

Neither team scored in the fourth, both teams putting a runner on with a hit batter (Chris).  The Jrts were retired on three fly balls to Bobby, Leo (now in right) and Bill at second.

In the fifth, a single, single, walk, single, balk, and single off Bobby and John in relief, produced three runs without an out.  But with runners on second and third, John struck out the side to keep the score at 7-5.

In the bottom half, the Pirates sliced the lead to one.  Leo drew a one out walk.  Brent reached on a fielder's choice forcing Leo out at second.  After David walked and Brent advanced to second, Charlie Gabriel singled driving in Brent.  Jose reached on a HBP.

No score in the sixth.  A Jet single got no further than first.  The tree outs were fly balls to Jose in left and Bill at second and a ground out from Bill to Bobby now at first.  The only Pirate runner was Bill who reached after being hit by a pitch.

The Jets took command in the top of the last, pushing across three runs on a couple of singles, a couple of errors and a walk.  It could have been more but ground outs to Brent (to Bobby) and David (to Bill) and a strike out left two stranded.

The Pirates tried to come back one more time.  Leo singled and Brent was hit.  The third hit batter forced a pitcher change with Troy Patterson coming on.  After a strike out Charlie singled and Jose reached on an error with Brent scoring for the final score of 10-8, a Jet victory and the Pirates'  seventh loss of the season.

Rule Interpretation

Sunday afternoon in the fourth, the second Pirate run scored as follows:

Jose singled.
Bill singled, Jose went to third.
Juan walked, loading the bases.
Jackson grounded into a fielder's choice; Jose scored; Bill was out at third (first out); Juan went to second
Dustin reached on an error; Juan went to third; Jackson went to second.
Leo struck out (second out).
Leo ran for Juan.
The order of the next play:

1.  Bobby then hit a ground ball to third.

2.  The third baseman threw wide to second.

3.  Leo crossed home plate.

4.  Dustin was tagged out before reaching the second base bag.

5.  The umpire ruled the run counted.

Charlie was sure the run should not count, that although the runner was tagged out, that it was still a force play because Dustin was no longer entitled to first base when Bobby became a base runner.  Someone in the dugout, whose name shall be changed to protect the innocent, was equally sure that a tag out was not a force out.

I, not to be confused with the person whose name was changed, e-mailed the NCAA Baseball Rules Secretary.  His response is: Force play for the third out. No run can score.

The person whose name was changed, not to be confused with me, was wrong, Charlie was right, Charlie was silent, and the PIRATES WIN.

Good Morning Buc-a-ruz!

What a game!  That was a fantastic team effort.  I believe it was Charlie who said the top of the lineup need to do something because the bottom is not.  As one of the middle lineup guys (I didn't do anything) let me say way to go bottom!  You guys got on when it counted the most and the top came along and push the runs across to send us to victory.  That is a team effort.

Congratulations to Jose (5-0) for going the whole way and that is two victories he has against the Dodgers.  I am still pinching myself and have lots of black and blue marks, thinking I was dreaming, Juan threw three guys out (thanks to Brent, Bill and Dustin  for put the tags on) and they were all at critical points in the game.  Team effort!

Biggest hit of the season!  Goes to Bill "Woody" Keeling for the laser shot (that's what it says in book) down the right field line foe a stand up double and 2 RBI's due to the agile running of David Stierle (who was still arguing the ball never hit me) and nephew Chris "the kid" Gregory!  Team effort.

Boys, Tuesday night we play at 7:00 pm (not 7:30) at Memorial against the Jets.  Pretty sure we will see Troy.  Bobby Blair will take the hill for the start.  I know David Porta and Brian Hooper are done for the season.  I haven't heard how Scotty is doing? I know Dustin is not available Tuesday.  Any other bodies not able to make game please let me know.

Guys as a reminder - We play tomorrow night (Jets), we play a double header on Sunday (Dodgers & Thunder) and we are going to play the Red Sox again!  On Tuesday August 28th, 7:00pm at Memorial, we'll play the Red Sox for the 2nd place championship game.  This will be are opportunity to avenge our lose to those cheatin' bastards!  We will need another team effort!

The Orioles game is no longer a suspended game but officially considered a loss.  11 - 6 and four more game to go.  Lets put together a winning streak to close out the season.  Keep in mind we still need a team picture.  I would like to have everyone aim for the 28th to be there, in uniform (those injured in tops, at least) and then we can make it official.  Too, plans are forming for an end of season get together, more details coming.

Good job guys and see you tomorrow night!

Cubero, Keeling Pace Pirates

The Pirates beat the Dodgers 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Memorial.

The visiting Pirates opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth inning.  In the first, Bill Keeling singled and stole second but was stranded there.  In the second Dustin Stover singled and was sacrificed to second by Leo Brown but he, too, was left stranded.  In the fourth, Jose Cubero led off the inning with a single and went to third on Bill's second single of the day.  After Bill picked up his second stolen base and Dustin walked, Jackson Nave's fielder's choice drove in Jose on the out at third.  Dustin reached base on an error with Juan scoring from second on the play.

The Dodgers got one back in the fourth against Jose.  In the first a lead-off single and a stolen base was erased when Juan Ortiz threw the runner out to Brent Bonte at third.  After a pop out to Bill, the next batter walked but on an attempted steal Juan threw out his second runner of the inning this time to Bill at second.  In the second a pop up to Bill, a walk, a fielder's choice and a stolen base scored no runs when a line drive was snagged by Brent.  The Dodgers went three up, three down in the third on a strike out, a pair of ground outs- Jose to Jackson and Dustin to Jackson.  A lead-off walk an error and a single produced the Dodger run.  In the inning, Jose recorded his second strike out and fly outs to Chris Gregory in center and Leo Brown in left prevented any further damage.

Neither team scored in the fifth.  John Denney reached on an error.

In the sixth the Dodgers tied the game.  The Pirates failed to score in spite of Bill's third single.  The Dodgers took advantage on a failed pick-off attempt to score.

Both teams went out in order in the seventh, the Dodgers going out on a pair of ground pouts to Dustin and Jose's fourth K.

In he eighth, the Pirates could do nothing and the Dodgers took the lead on a single, stolen base, wild pitch and sacrifice fly.  The score after eight was 4-3 Dodgers.

In the ninth, with one out, David Stierle reached on a HBP and charlie Gabriel on a walk.  Chris Gregory went in to run for Charlie.  With two out, Bill recorded his fourth hit of the game, a double down the right field line with David and Chris scoring giving the Pirates their 4-3 lead.  In the ninth, after two outs, the Dodgers threatened by loading the bases before Jose ended the game with his fifth strike out and a complete game victory.

The Pirates improved to 11-6 while the Dodgers fell to 5-12.

Whew!

It stormed like the dickens last night!  Baseballs and rain that is.  That was the hardest I think I've ever seen the O's hit the ball last night!

According to the DABL rain out line both games last night are suspended games, their and ours.  Both are to start in the 5th inning where we left off.  When, where and how that game will resume I do not know yet.  But I will inform you once I know more.

Thanks John for giving it a go and Brent for trying to hold on.  We got a lot of nagging injuries and illnesses that have zapped the team spirit and we need to find a way to get our spirit back for the final push to end of season.

Sunday August 19th at 4:30 pm at Memorial Park is our next game against the Dodgers.  Jose will take the hill.  Hope that we didn't have any further injuries and others will be able to make it Sunday.  Please let me know if you are not going to make it.  Otherwise, I'll see you Sunday.

Go Bucs!

Orioles, Rain Pound Pirates

A lead-off triple by the Orioles against an ailing John Denny and a short-handed Pirate team was followed by ten more hits, including two doubles and a home run; a couple of errors; and walk resulting in a ten run first inning, Thursday night at memorial.  Three Pirate hits by Jose Cubero, Brent Bonte and Dustin Stover) in the bottom of the inning resulted in just a single run.

The Orioles added three more runs in the second, on a walk, hit by pitch, double and a pair of singles, all after two were out to make the score 13-1, which score held up to the top of the fifth.  The Pirates had two on in the fourth on a single by Jose and Juan Ortiz being a hit by a pitch.

As Brent was warming up to face the Orioles in the fifth (Leo had tossed a couple innings in relief of John who was unable to continue) the lightening and rain which had been threatening all game long arrived.  The game was called as an Oriole victory.  The Orioles improved to 16-2 and the Pirates fell to 10-6.

Ok Bucs -

Great job getting the win yesterday!  It was a tough battle but we got it done.  Good job Jose and John for getting the win and save, respectively.  Our next game is probably the biggest game of the year!  Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Memorial we face the league leading Orioles and we could split the series with a win.  No pressure!  It's possible we could be rained out because rain is in the forecast.  Lets be ready!  Get healed up, haired over and buc up because we all want to beat the birds.

Adam will be on the mound for them.  John Denney will take the mound for the Pirates!

We also have all of the rained out games scheduled:

Sunday August 19th at 4:30 pm at Memorial - Dodgers
Tuesday August 21st at 7:00 pm at Memorial - Jets
Sunday August 26th at 1:00 pm and 4:30 p.m - Dodgers then Thunder - 7 Inning games

This is barring any other rain outs!  So it could change.

Too, there is apparently a championship series scheduled for Sept. 7th and 9th.
I'm not sure but I think its supposed to be a three game series between the top team for each division.
We actually helped the Red Sox by winning yesterday gain on the Jets but that's ok.
I like winning!  Let's keep it up and I'll see you Thursday.  Anybody not going to make it?

Pirates Improve To 10-5

The home-standing Pirates beat the Jets 7-5 Sunday afternoon at Memorial.

The Jets struck in the top of the first but had to regret that they scored only a single run.  Their lead-off batter singled against starter, Jose Cubero, but the next batter lined out to Chris Gregory on a sliding catch in center field and his throw to first to John Denney was in plenty of time to double the runner off.  Two more singles and two walks resulted in only that one run as Jose struck out the next batter.

In the Pirates home half, two Pirates reached on errors (Jose and Bill Keeling), Chris walked and three Pirates singled (Juan Ortiz, Scotty Irish and Brent Bonte) with  Jose, Bill Keeling, Juan, and Scotty scoring for a 4-1 Pirate lead after One.

In the second, a one out walk was harmless.  David threw out the lead-off man to John at first, Jose recorded his second strike out, and Bill tracked down a pop up over his shoulder in short right field.  The Pirates made it 6-1 with Jose, Bill, John and Scotty singling, Juan walking with Bill and John scoring.

The Jets made it a game in the third.  The first four batters singled and a couple of Pirate errors resulted in a four run inning and a 6-5 score.  Chris manufactured the last run of the game in the fourth.  After a single, Chris stole second and third and came on when the attempt to throw him out went into left field.  The Pirate bats were quiet the rest of the way.  Jose singled in the fourth, Brent walked in the sixth and Leo Brown singled in the eighth.

But Pirate pitching and defense shut the jets down, too.

In the fourth, Scotty, at second, threw out the first batter and, after a single, started a double play to David and John.

A fly out to Chris, a pick-off (Jose to John to Scotty) and Jose's third strike out retired the Jets in the fifth.

A sixth inning lead-off error led to nothing as the next three Jets went down (Bill to David; a pop up to David and Jose's fourth K).

The Jets went three up three down in the seventh, eighth and ninth, with John pitching the eight and ninth.  The seventh saw a line drive to David, a fly out to Chris and a ground out- David to John.  In the eighth John threw eight pitches, all strikes and the Jets went out on a fly ball to Jose in left, a pair of ground outs, Brent at third to Leo at first and David to Leo.  And  in the ninth, with John again trowing all strikes, he got the save and Jose the win when the Jets went down John to Leo, pop up to David and Bill at second to Leo for the final out.

The Pirates meet the division leading Orioles Thursday night at Memorial.

Force Play Slide Rule

    1. d.
      Force Play Slide Rule

The intent of the force-play-slide rule is to ensure the safety of the defensive player. This is a safety as well as an interference rule. Whether the defense could have completed the double play has no bearing on the applicability of this rule. This rule pertains to a force-play situation at any base, regardless of the number of outs.
      1. a.
On any force play, the runner must slide on the ground and in a direct line between the two bases.

Exception—A runner need not slide directly into a base as long as the runner slides or runs in a direction away from the fielder to avoid making contact or altering the play of the fielder.
        1. (1)
"On the ground” means either a head-first slide or a slide with one leg and buttock on the ground.
        2. (2)
"Directly into a base” means the runner’s entire body (feet, legs, trunk and arms) must stay in a straight line between the bases.
        3. (3)
If a runner goes into a base standing up and does not make contact or alter the play of the defensive player, interference shall not be called.
      2. b.
Contact with a fielder is legal and interference shall not be called if the runner:
        1. (1)
Makes a legal slide directly to the base, or
        2. (2)
Is on the ground at the time of contact and the fielder moves directly down the line between the two bases to attempt a play.
        3. (3)
Makes a legal slide and makes contact with a defensive player who is on or over, but not beyond, the base.
        4. (4)
When the base runner slides beyond the base, but does not (a) make contact with, or (b) alter the play of the defensive player, interference shall not be called.
      3. c.
Actions by a runner are illegal and interference shall be called if:
        1. (1)
          The runner slides or runs out of the base line in the direction of the fielder;
        2. (2)
          The runner uses a rolling, cross-body or pop-up slide and either makes contact with or alters the play of a fielder;
        3. (3)
          The runner’s raised leg makes contact higher than the fielder’s knee when in a standing position;
        4. (4)
          The runner goes beyond the base and either makes contact with or alters the play of the fielder;
          1. (a)
"Beyond the base” means any part of the offensive player’s body makes contact with or alters the play of the fielder beyond the base.
        5. (5)
          The runner slashes or kicks the fielder with either leg;
        6. (6)
The runner illegally slides toward or contacts the fielder even if the fielder makes no attempt to throw to complete a play.

          PENALTY:
          1. (1)
With less than two outs, the batter-runner, as well as the interfering runner, shall be declared out and no other runner(s) shall advance.
          2. (2)
With two outs, the interfering runner shall be declared out and no other runner(s) shall advance.
          3. (3)
If the runner’s slide or collision is flagrant, the runner shall be ejected from the contest.
          4. (4)
If the bases are loaded with no outs, a double-play attempt is made, and interference is called, all other runners must return to their original bases.
  1. 4.f
Each league must set its own standards of player/team sportsmanship, but must encourage suspensions for infractions unbefitting to the image and policies of the league.
  2. 4.g
Failure to abide by age regulations - the managers must all recognize their responsibility to the league and the perpetuity of it as to not cross the line where winning is more important than playing. An opposing manager may at anytime have the right to question a player’s age. If a manager wants to lodge a protest, proof of age and residence must be mailed to the manager who lodged his protest by Friday of the following week. If an under age player is detected, penalties whether to the individual or team will be decided by the league president and board of directors. As a national precedent, the penalties will be forfeiture of all games in which the under-age player participated in and a minimum two-year suspension. If the manager had prior knowledge, he is subject to similar suspension.

Pirate Comeback Falls Short

The Red Sox opened walk, single and double and scored three in the top of the first.  An opening walk in the second scored to make the score 4-0.  The Pirates went three up, three down in the first two innings before, in the third, David Stierle reached on an error and, after a strike out, Charlie Gabriel singled.  But David was caught off second after a fly out to center for the third out.

The Pirates scored in the fourth when Bobby Blair reached on an error and Leo Brown drove him in with a single and the Pirates took a 6-5 lead with five in the fifth.  David Stierle and Brian Hooper singled and advanced when Charlie reached on an error.  Jose Cubero drove in two with a double.  Scotty Irish walked and Charlie, Jose and Scotty all scored as the Red Sox kicked the ball around.

The Red Sox took the lead again with two in the sixth but the Pirates fought back to tie it at six.  David Stierle reached on catcher's interference, went to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

But the Red Sox scored three in the seventh and this time the Pirates could not answer and the victory went to the Sox 9-6.

PIRATES BEAT COLONELS

Jose Cubero pitched six innings of shut-out baseball and singled three times in five at bats to lead the Pirates to a 11-2 victory over the Colonels Sunday afternoon at Memorial.  Jackson Nave pitched the last three innings only giving up two unearned runs.

Both teams failed to capitalize on first inning singles.  Bill Keeling's came with one out and the Colonels'  after a Jose strike out and a ground out 4-3 (Bobby Blair to Jackson).  Jose closed the inning with strike out number two.

In the second the Pirates took a 1-0 lead on singles by Scotty Irish, Bobby Blair and John Denney and a walk to Leo Brown.  The Colonels alternated fly outs (to Bobby at second, to Chris Gregory in center, and Leo in right) with a pair of singles but failed to tie the game.

In the third, Charles Gabriel reached on an error and Jose singled but neither team scored.  Jose struck out his third and fourth Colonels and the third out came on a 5-3 ground out (Brent Bonte to Jackson).

In the fourth, a lead-off walk to Jackson and a single by Juan Ortiz put runners on second and third after a throwing error.  Scotty Irish drove in Jackson with a single and Jaun scored on Bobby's sac fly.  Leo added a single.  The Colonels wasted a one out (4-3, Bill to Jackson) double.  A pair of ground outs to second and third (Brent) ended the inning with the score 3-0.

The Pirates scored three times in the fifth and led 6-0.  David Stierle walked and stole second and third and scored on Charlie's RBI ground-out.  After the second out, Bill singled,  Brent reached on an error and both scored on Jackson's double.  The Colonels lead-off in the bottom grounded out short (David) to first (Jackson) and Jose recorded his seventh strike out.  The next Colonel singled and went to second on a passed ball but was picked off second, Jose to David at short.

The sixth inning was scoreless.  Bobby singled and stole second but died there. After a lead-off walk to the Colonels Jose struck out his seventh, Chris threw out a runner at second from center field and John went wide at first to nail the batter at first (to Jose).

The Pirates stretched their lead to 11-0 in the seventh.  Chris singled and stole second and third.  David singled and stole second.  Chris scored on Charlie's RBI fielder's choice with Charlie reaching also.  David scored on Jose's single. Bill and Jackson singled and Juan reached on an error with Jose and Bill scoring for the final Pirate runs.  The Colonels went three up three down against Jackson- a grounder to Brent (3b) and two fly balls to Chris (cf).

In the eighth, the Pirates could manage only a walk to Chris and the Colonels went three up three down again (ground-out (Bill to John) and a pop out and an unassisted ground out to Jackson from the mound.

In the ninth, the Pirates loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Jose, Bill and Brent.  But Jackson's smash down the third base line turned in to a line drive out and double play.

The Colonels got on the board with two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth.  A lead off error and a walk put runners on first and second.  A double drove in one and left runners on second and third.  But went a pitch got away from Juan the runner trying to score from third was thrown out at the plate to Jackson.  After a strike out a single plated the last Colonel run and the game ended on a ground out David to John.

Whew!

Well boys, I figured it out!  Did you see the full moon last night?  We all know strange things happen when there is a full moon!  Too, I know it will be all better because the sun will come up tomorrow...oh wait no sun!

Lets put that game behind us and move on.  We have the Colonels on Sunday 4:30 pm at Memorial.  Jose has the hill.  Forecast is for rain all weekend but more so on Sunday, so I'll be on rain watch and keep you updated.  Let's get back out there and turn this thing around and get back on a winning streak!

Also, don't forget that Monday August 6th at Providence High School we will have a hitting instructor who will be giving instructions to any and all that want the information.  No cost to you.  Come on out and learn something about the art of hitting.

Hope to see you guys on Sunday.

From Brian - Hitting Clinic directions

When you pull in to the parking lot drive to the back of the school. I will get there early so just look for my car. Jacob will be going back to school in Arkansas end of next week so this is the only time we can use his knowledge. I have another guy we can use on a later date. He played some Double A ball but his claim to fame is the players he taught hitting fundamentals. These players include Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Josh Hamilton. This guy was with the Bats organization.

Senators Silence Pirates

The Senators threw a two hitter at the Pirates, giving up only one run in a 10-1 victory Thursday night.  The Pirates run came in the fifth inning.  Jackson Nave singled.  Dustin Stover reached on a fielders choice, Jackson out at second.  Dustin advanced to second on John Denney's walk and stole third.  Dustin scored on Bobby Blair's sacrifice fly.

The Senators never trailed, scoring three in the top of the first on a hit batter, a double and a single; two in the third on only one hit; two in the fourth; and three more in the seventh.

Chris Gregory had a single for the Pirates (their first) in the fourth.    In addition to John's walk in the fifth, Leo Brown walked twice and Juan Ortiz, Jackson and David Stierle also walked.

The Pirates meet the Colonels Sunday afternoon at 4:30 at Memorial.

Latest From Leo- 8/1

Guys -

Just got a call from "Hopper" that he is in contact with a fellow by the name of Jacob Julius who has some Minor League experience (Orioles) and is willing to give us some of his expertise for a nominal fee.  As of right now we are looking at a tentative date and time of Monday August 6th at 7:00 p.m. at Providence High School in New Albany.

Don't know what the charge will be.

What I'm looking for is solid conformation that you would like to do this.  It is going to be hitting instruction/practice/directions only!   Let me or Brian know if you are interested.  Brian is working on getting the guy locked down on day and time.

Also, want to say great job this past Sunday for the win over the Thunder!  It was a great team effort.  We we're up, then tied and worked together to win going away.  Great job by the pitchers Bobby sorry we didn't get you the win but good job.  Jackson congratulation to you for getting the win and Brent great job of slamming the door!

We play tomorrow night (August 2) and we have the Senators at 7:00 pm at Shawnee!  Dustin is on the hill.  Guys we play the Senators tough every time we see them.  Bring your "A" game so we can notch another win and keep putting the heat on the Orioles.  Only know of Jose not being in town for game is there anyone else who will not make tomorrow night?  Great see you then.

Triple Play Sparks Pirates Win

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the second, the Thunder loaded the bases against Bobby Blair with three walks.  But the next Thunder batter grounded the ball to Dustin Stover at short.  Dustin flipped to David Stierle at second who turned the double play to Jackson Nave at first, with the runner on third scoring to take a 2-1 lead.  But the runner from second tried to catch the Pirates napping and was thrown out at the plate, Jackson to Scotty Irish.

The Pirates had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a one out walk by Brian Hooper after a 0-2 count.  Brian went to second on a passed ball, was sacrificed to third by Juan Ortiz, and scored when Jackson reached on an error.  Dustin also singled in the inning.  The Thunder tied the game in the bottom of the first on a pair of singles.

In the top of the third, Chris Gregory led off with a walk and stole second and third and scored on Brian Hooper's single.  After an out, Jackson singled moving Brian to second.  Brain scored when Dustin reached on an error and Jackson advanced to third. Dustin stole second and on John Denney's RBI single (driving in Jackson) went to third and scored on Brent Bonte's fielder choice.

The Thunder put four men on in the third.  The first batter reached on a walk but was thrown out trying to steal, Scotty to David.  After a strike out, the Thunder loaded the bases with a single, walk and hit batter before a pop out to David at second left the bases full.  The score at the end on the third was 5-2.

In the fourth, the Pirates scored their sixth run when Leo Brown led off with a single, stole second, and scored when Brian reached on an error.  The Thunder failed to score but left the bases loaded again.

The Thunder cut the lead to 6-3 in the fifth with a run off of Jackson in relief of Bobby-  a lead off single and a stolen base putting the runner in scoring position for a one out RBI single.

The Pirates could not plate Scotty after his two out single in the sixth, but the Thunder struck for three runs to tie the game.  A walk and sacrifice put a Thunder runner on second.  A single, another walk and a wild pitch scored one. and two more singles and a walk tied the game and left the bases loaded.  But a one hop ground ball to Brent at third resulted in a 5-4-3 double play (Brent to Scotty to Jackson) to end the threat.

In the seventh, the Pirates regained the lead.  Brian was hit by a pitch and Juan singled and both scored on Jackson's double into the gap in left center.  The Thunder could manage only a two out walk.

The Pirates made in 10-6 in the eighth.  After an out, Leo reached on an error and moved to third on Scotty's double.  Leo scored and Scotty went to third on Charlie Gabriel's ground out and Scotty scored on David Stierle's single.  A one out single failed to produce a run against Brent in the bottom of the eighth with the game ending on a strike out with Jackson getting the win.
