Jets Outlast Pirates

The Fleur De Lis Division Champions Jets used a three run seventh inning to beat the Pirates 10-8 Tuesday Night.

The Jets struck quickly in the top of the first with a lead-off single, a pair of stolen bases and and an RBI single off starter Bobby Blair.  The Pirates failed to answer, stranding Jose Cubero (single) and Chris Gregory (walk).

The Jets made it 3-0 in the second with back to back lead-off doubles, a stolen base and a sac fly.  A pair of ground outs to short (David Stierle to Leo Brown) ended the inning.  The Pirates matched those two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Bobby singled and was sacrificed to second by Leo.  Brent Bonte drove Bobby in with a single.  Brent stole second and scored moved to third on a single by David.  When Brian Hooper reached first on a passed ball on a strick out, re-injuring his shoulder in the process, Brent came in to score.  After two it was 3-2 Jets.

The Jets pushed across their fourth run after a pair of lead off walks in the third. With one in and two on a line drive to Leo at first, a ground out Bobby to Leo, and a fly out to Chris in center put out the fire.

The Pirates took their first lead.  Scotty Irish singled; Bill Keeling walked and both scored on John Denney's double- safe at second on a hook slide away from the tag.  Bobby walked but both he and John were left on.  the Pirates led 5-4.

Neither team scored in the fourth, both teams putting a runner on with a hit batter (Chris).  The Jrts were retired on three fly balls to Bobby, Leo (now in right) and Bill at second.

In the fifth, a single, single, walk, single, balk, and single off Bobby and John in relief, produced three runs without an out.  But with runners on second and third, John struck out the side to keep the score at 7-5.

In the bottom half, the Pirates sliced the lead to one.  Leo drew a one out walk.  Brent reached on a fielder's choice forcing Leo out at second.  After David walked and Brent advanced to second, Charlie Gabriel singled driving in Brent.  Jose reached on a HBP.

No score in the sixth.  A Jet single got no further than first.  The tree outs were fly balls to Jose in left and Bill at second and a ground out from Bill to Bobby now at first.  The only Pirate runner was Bill who reached after being hit by a pitch.

The Jets took command in the top of the last, pushing across three runs on a couple of singles, a couple of errors and a walk.  It could have been more but ground outs to Brent (to Bobby) and David (to Bill) and a strike out left two stranded.

The Pirates tried to come back one more time.  Leo singled and Brent was hit.  The third hit batter forced a pitcher change with Troy Patterson coming on.  After a strike out Charlie singled and Jose reached on an error with Brent scoring for the final score of 10-8, a Jet victory and the Pirates'  seventh loss of the season.
