PIRATES BEAT COLONELS

Jose Cubero pitched six innings of shut-out baseball and singled three times in five at bats to lead the Pirates to a 11-2 victory over the Colonels Sunday afternoon at Memorial.  Jackson Nave pitched the last three innings only giving up two unearned runs.

Both teams failed to capitalize on first inning singles.  Bill Keeling's came with one out and the Colonels'  after a Jose strike out and a ground out 4-3 (Bobby Blair to Jackson).  Jose closed the inning with strike out number two.

In the second the Pirates took a 1-0 lead on singles by Scotty Irish, Bobby Blair and John Denney and a walk to Leo Brown.  The Colonels alternated fly outs (to Bobby at second, to Chris Gregory in center, and Leo in right) with a pair of singles but failed to tie the game.

In the third, Charles Gabriel reached on an error and Jose singled but neither team scored.  Jose struck out his third and fourth Colonels and the third out came on a 5-3 ground out (Brent Bonte to Jackson).

In the fourth, a lead-off walk to Jackson and a single by Juan Ortiz put runners on second and third after a throwing error.  Scotty Irish drove in Jackson with a single and Jaun scored on Bobby's sac fly.  Leo added a single.  The Colonels wasted a one out (4-3, Bill to Jackson) double.  A pair of ground outs to second and third (Brent) ended the inning with the score 3-0.

The Pirates scored three times in the fifth and led 6-0.  David Stierle walked and stole second and third and scored on Charlie's RBI ground-out.  After the second out, Bill singled,  Brent reached on an error and both scored on Jackson's double.  The Colonels lead-off in the bottom grounded out short (David) to first (Jackson) and Jose recorded his seventh strike out.  The next Colonel singled and went to second on a passed ball but was picked off second, Jose to David at short.

The sixth inning was scoreless.  Bobby singled and stole second but died there. After a lead-off walk to the Colonels Jose struck out his seventh, Chris threw out a runner at second from center field and John went wide at first to nail the batter at first (to Jose).

The Pirates stretched their lead to 11-0 in the seventh.  Chris singled and stole second and third.  David singled and stole second.  Chris scored on Charlie's RBI fielder's choice with Charlie reaching also.  David scored on Jose's single. Bill and Jackson singled and Juan reached on an error with Jose and Bill scoring for the final Pirate runs.  The Colonels went three up three down against Jackson- a grounder to Brent (3b) and two fly balls to Chris (cf).

In the eighth, the Pirates could manage only a walk to Chris and the Colonels went three up three down again (ground-out (Bill to John) and a pop out and an unassisted ground out to Jackson from the mound.

In the ninth, the Pirates loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Jose, Bill and Brent.  But Jackson's smash down the third base line turned in to a line drive out and double play.

The Colonels got on the board with two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth.  A lead off error and a walk put runners on first and second.  A double drove in one and left runners on second and third.  But went a pitch got away from Juan the runner trying to score from third was thrown out at the plate to Jackson.  After a strike out a single plated the last Colonel run and the game ended on a ground out David to John.
