Well boys, the O's got us again!  We just can't seem to string enough hits when we need them and we kill ourselves with errors and beat ourselves.

The Pirates play our final regular season game on Tuesday September 3rd at 7:00 pm against the Jets at Germantown.  This will give the team 12 days to recover/heal from those nagging sprains and pulls.

After last nights loss we remain tied with the Senators in the division, but they are one game up on us overall.  The tie-breaker for the division is the overall record for the season (don't ask me why).  Both Pirates and Senators have one game left.  They have the O's on Sunday (first time I'm cheering for O's) and we have the Jets.  IF, the Senators lose against the O's and when we beat the Jets we will remain tied, in division and overall!  That means we will play a one game playoff game against the Senators.  That one game would be played on Friday Sept. 6th at Shawnee, 7 pm.  Winner gets the O's for a best of three Championship series!  Loser plays 2nd place team in the other division.

Good luck to John Denney & David Porta (Baltimore) and Jose Cubero (Huntsville) over the Labor Day weekend tournaments.  Safe travels and try not to get to banged up!

Guys, I've made the selection for who will represent the Pirates in this years All Star game.  I'm allowed four spots, one pitcher and three position player spots.  It's never easy making these choices because you all are All Stars (I know - little corny).

Pitcher - John Denney

Position Players - Chris Gregory, Jose Cubero, Bobby Blair

Alternate - Dustin Stover

All Star game is October 13th at 4:30 pm against the other divisions All Stars at Memorial Park.

Anyone interested in 49+ Fall Ball get in touch with David Allison at allison83@bellsouth.net or by cell 502-594-0872.  The Fall Ball season will start in September.  I believe there is a meeting on the 26th to pick players and then start play that weekend.  Get in touch with David to learn more.

All for now, get rested up and lets get ready for the Jets on the 3rd and go from there.  Have a great weekend!

Great Job Guys!

First, I want to thank the comedy styling of the Juan and Hooper show!

Well boys, we came, we saw, we got another victory!  We are now down to our last two regular season games of the 2013 season.  We are tied with the Senators 10-8-1 overall season record!  We split the series with them 2 games a piece.

Our next game is this Thursday, August 22nd, at 7:00 pm at Germantown vs the Orioles.  The last game for the Pirate regular season is Tuesday Sept. 3rd against the Jets.

The Senators have two games left.  One against the O's and one against the Colonels.  You and I both know they should handle the Colonels however they like us, need an A effort game to beat the O's.

We need an extra effort game this Thursday to beat the O's and then wait 12 days to beat the Jets to win the division outright!  If the Pirates and Senators are tied in the division, (which we are) the tie breaker is overall record!  If we are still tied an one game playoff will be Sept. 6th (Friday)!

WE NEED TWO WINS!!!!

There is a best-of-three playoff for the two divisional champs.  Those games start on Sept 8th and 10th and 12th, if necessary.

Any players 49+ interested in Fall Ball this year?  The Fall season will start on September 26th and games will be played Friday night and Sunday afternoon.  Cost is $60.00 (?), be sure to get a hold of David Allison and let him know if interested.

All Star weekend is Oct. 12th and 13th.  The 12th will have a Father and Son game, as well as a Home Run and Hitting skills contest.  On the 13th the 38+ All Stars will take on the 45+ All Stars!

I will be in contact with those players who I've decided will represent the Pirates in the All Star game.  Boys, this is a tough decision because I only get 4 spots to select for.

Well boys last night was a loss but it was the best pitching duel I've seen played in the MSBL!  Jose, great job on the mound. I'm just sorry we couldn't get the bats to help you get a W instead.  I thought for sure the ball that Dustin whacked would be gone and tie the game but that's baseball.
Next up we play the Jets on Sunday July 14th at 1:00 pm at Memorial Park. We will be dressed in whites for Sunday's game with gold hats.  I've been told that we may see some changes to our schedule to help make up some of the rain outs.  Which means we may have a 3 game week coming up.  So I'm letting you know now.

I had Charlie, Chris and Dustin inform me that they will be out the last week of July for vacation.  Mark is going to be taking a leave for the next month to help his family take care of family member.

Guys, you see now why I decided to carry such a large roster.  We've got guys on DL (4 to be exact), vacations (2 now and 3 to come, plus more), work schedules and life in general.  It will all work out in the long run.

See you guys at the ball park on Sunday!

Four (4) game winning streak!  Way to go boys!  We are on a roll!  Lets keep it going next Sunday.

Great job and a real team effort to put a smack down on the Yankees!  I promise I will have the past five games logged in on stats program and get to you this week or Sunday at game.

For June, with one rain out our record stand at 4-3-1.  First place in our division and ready to take on the Colonels in our first game of July (7th - that is).  Remember this game is going to be played at Germantown (1 pm) and we will wear white uniforms.

I'm told there is a tournament going on at the park the same time we play.  So if asked about paying admission tell them at gate you are playing in the MSBL league and that and $2.00 will get you a cup of coffee!

We have few folks that will not be at this Sunday's game - Bobby, Brent and Scotty will be vacationing, not together because that would be wierd, right!  Brent and Scotty will also miss the Orioles game that next Tuesday following the Colonels game.

David Porta is recuperating from hernia surgery and on the DL for at least three weeks (team will not call up replacement from minors).  Get well Dave and get back as soon as you can.  Too, we still have Jackson, Juan and Brian on the DL.

I know a few of you guys have Insight email accounts and know that they have been transitioned to the Time Warner system.  My understanding is come July 7th you may need to have other access to email.  If you have changed your email address or about to, please be sure that I know so David S and I can keep up with you.

I want to wish you all a safe and Happy 4th of July.  Take a moment on that day to remember those who have sacrificed so much so that we may enjoy our safety, our freedom and still get to play baseball at our age!  God Bless America!

Porta Post-Op

Hey guys- had the surgery and I guess it went well.  Went home and began clearing trees from my property... Then realized I was actually passed out in my bed.  Oxycodone- gooood.  Probably out 3 weeks.
   Continue the streak!!!!!!

Holy Cow!

The Pirates are on a winning streak!  3 games to be specific and ready to make it four with a meeting this Sunday against the Yankees, 1:00 pm at Clarksville Little League Park.

We will be dressed in white uniforms for Sunday's game.  You guys getting the pattern down, yet?

Great game last night boys!  John D, great job getting the complete game win.  We had the bats come alive and the defense was pretty awesome.  Mark Ferguson - catch of the night (sorry Chris yours was good too)!

I apologize to Rich and Rick for not getting you guys an at-bat last night.  I screwed up and lost track of innings.  I will make it up to you both.

I need to know a couple things so please let me know so I can make note of it because if I don't write it down I have a hard time remembering.

1. I need to know who will not be at game on Sunday other than David and Rick.

2. Would you guys be able to play on Tuesday July 2nd? If we were able to make up our rain out w/(Orioles).  We are about only team with a single game rain out, not sure we'll play just need to know how many so I can report to David A - yes or no.

3. I am being reminded of vacations dates.  Do me a favor and let me know your dates so I can plan accordingly.

Last but not least lets hear it for Jose' and his great coaching job getting the Pirates on the winning track (Fire Leo!).

Well Boys -

I guess you call that an old fashioned ass whipping!  Gotta say we looked terrible and nothing would go our way.  You saw, I saw, the rest of the world saw it - we sucked!

But that was only one game and we have 20 more games to play.  So lets put this one behind us and let's learn from the mistakes and move on.  The only thing I still see us needing major inprovement is we have to get guys on base and then move them over and score more runs than the other guy!  So guys lets be patient at the plate lets get good pitches to hit and lets have some fun.

The DL list is growing.  Doc Juan is out for the season!  Ouch!  He has a tear in his calf muscle right behind his knee.  Jackson is still out with a shoulder issue.  Brian is out with shoulder as well, but is contemplating a return to hit and run bases only.

Guys, this Thursday I will not be at game due to travels out of town for work.  Jose will be in charge of line up and corraling you knuckleheads.  Is there anyone else who can not make the game on Thursday other than me and the guys on DL.  If you can not make let me know and I will pass on to Jose or email him or text him.  Too, I will not make it on Sunday either due to my Mom and Dad are celebrating 60 years of wedded bliss and the family is gathering.  So again, Jose will be in charge and let me know if you can't make Sunday game.

We got a good group folks.  We're still along way from finishing the season.  So lets keep it going and keep swinging and the hits will fall for us, too!

Fellas -

Tough loss last night!  We battled a much improved and last year's champion team last night to a one run loss.  I'd hate losing but one run is better than a blowout!

Good job getting us deep in the game Jose.  Brent good effort trying to hold on.  Scotty as always great job behind the dish.  Also had a great job with the infield effort all away around.  Couple outfield mistakes and we maybe pull the game out.  But hey that's baseball and we'll get another crack at them later on.

Also may have to take Charlie's advice and flip the batting line-up!  Us at the top didn't do so well, but you folks following us, did a great job of keeping us in the game.

Boys we are now down two players from the original 20 on the roster.  Brian has blown out his shoulder again!  Did it during the Dodgers scrimmage and will not be playing this year.  He will still be on roster and help coach bases.  Too, Mark Ferguson, will not be playing this year due to a family issue with his sister and he needs to concentrate on taking care of her.

Sunday (6-9-13) we take on the Thunder at 4:30 pm at Memorial in Jeffersonville.  We wear white uniforms on Sunday with gold hat.

I know right now that Bobby will not be at game due to family commitment.  Is there anyone else who can not make Sunday's game?  Let me know asap.  Otherwise, see you on Sunday!

Got some good news and some bad news.
The good news is the new gold Pirates hats are in!  I will have one for each of you who have paid for it already.  At the time of order it was estimated that the cost of the hat and freight would be $10.00.  The actual cost is $ 7.00!  For those who paid the extra three bucks you will have refund coming to you.  That is the good news.
Now for the bad news!  I SCREWED UP!  I thought it was agreed at the manager's meeting we'd pay a team fee of $2850.00 per team ($142.50 per player x 20 players).  However, it has come to my attention the team fee was based on minimum of 15 players at $190.00 = $ 2850 and that every player would pay $190.00 to play.  This was not my understanding but I'm apparently the only one that heard it different.  That being said and me not be a rich man, I have to ask that all who have paid to come up with additional funds.  Again, I apologize for the misunderstanding on my part.  I wish I had the money to pay instead of asking for more but that's the facts, jack!
Those who gave me $200.00 you're paid with refund due.  Those who gave me $152.50, I need an additional $44.50.  Those who gave me $142.50 will need an additional $54.50.  Those who have not paid (4 of you) make check or give me cash for $197.00.  I have my list of who has paid what so I will send out a separate email to each as a reminder what I need in the way of funds from you.  If you can get to me asap.  Again, I really do apologize for the error on me.  If I were you I'd fire the manager!
Scrimmage on Sunday - There is rain in forecast.  If it rains to much to use Doss High field game may be moved.  I will only know this come Sunday morning but will let you know asap!  Several have asked about uniform for scrimmage.  Since I'm still gathering uniforms for four players I suggest wear what ever you would wear for practice.
Thanks again, sorry for the screw up.  If this money deal is issue please let me know.

We are going to scrimmage this Sunday May 19th against the Colonels at 4:30 pm at Doss High School.  Doss High School is located at 7601 St. Andrews Church Road - 40214.

The easiest direction I can give you to find Doss High School is to come at it off of Dixie Hwy, turn onto St. Andrews Road and follow it till you get to the school.

I have four guys I need money and/or waivers from please bring them with you so I can get turned in.  Waiver has to be complete before you can participate in games and money has to be paid too!
New hats have been ordered and are in.  Hopefully, I will have them to pass out on Sunday.  For those who have paid for hat, great!  If you didn't I know who you are and we'll settle up.

Boys, we are getting closer - 18 days til Opening Day!

Hello Pirates -

I got about half of you to respond to my previous email about having practice this weekend.  Again, I know it's Mother's Day on Sunday.  I thought what about Saturday?

Well, of the half of you I heard from it was an equal split of about half could go on Saturday and other half on Sunday.  Again I know Sunday is Mother's Day!

So for those who can make it on Saturday from 2 pm to 3:30 pm.  I will be at Des Pres park ready to hit ground balls, fly balls and BP.  For those who can make it on Sunday I will be at Des Pres from 3 pm to 4:30 pm to do the same.  If you can make both days you get a gold star!  Both days are going to be gorgeous so come on out and get some sun and work out the muscles!

Ahoy me matties -

From the west coast it is time to plan the next get together of the Pirates to do a little bit of practice!

The practice time for this Sunday (4/21)  is going be to move back to a 4:00 pm start!  This is due to Hikes Point having their Opening Day festivities this Sunday.

Right now, the head count for players confirmed to playing this year is 18.  They are:

Blair, Bonte, Braun, Brown, Cubero, Denney, Gabriel, Gregory, Hooper, Irish, Keeling, Mills, Nave, Ortiz, Porta, Seyffarth, Stierle, Stover.

I've heard from Lucas and Brotzge that they will not be playing this year.

That leaves me with Bright, Bruschi, and Caldwell with no definitive answer of yes or no.

Others who might be interested in playing:  I talked to Jeff King, Gregory has father from son's team, Mills has a friend, Ortiz had two or three guys, anyone else?

If any of these guys have true interest I have to start looking at "how many more do we want to have on our team".

Truthfully, I'd like them all to be able and play.  Honestly, it takes alot to try and give you guys equal time in the field and at bats.

See you on Sunday at Des Pres at 4 pm.

Wow!  12 guy made it to Des Pres yesterday for practice.  That ties all time record for participation of a Pirate practice.  Thank you to all who made it and you know who you are.  I hope you are not as sore as I am!

We will have two practices this week.  Wow!
First, there will be batting practice at John Denney's batting cage on Weds. April 10th at 5:30 p.m. He has Iron Mike already to go and it will pitch for hours!

Second, we will be back at Des Pres on Sunday April 14th at 2:00 p.m. for more infield and batting practice and getting legs and arms ready.

Last night I got notification that there is no longer a Red Sox team but there is a new team  - Yankees.  The Yankees is made up of some Red Sox players and other players picked up through sign ups.

April 28th is deadline for money and waivers.  I will email waiver to you later.  I have to have money and more importantly waiver before any player steps on field.  I will hope to have it to you so you can fill out and send back and/or bring to me at future practice.

Uniforms - for those who don't have one, I am trying to find the uniforms not being used and you will have to purchase them from those individuals.  We are also going to go back to wearing the gold and white tops.  White on Sunday and gold on weeknights.  I would suggest if you don't have white pants find some.  Of course you will need gray pants.  Black socks and belt and Pirates hat.

Go CARDS!

Hey guys!

60 DAYS!!!!

It is now 2 months, 60 days, 1440 hours, 86,400 minutes or 5,184,000 seconds until we start playing baseball this season!

Practice Sunday April 7th at 1:00 pm at Des Pres Park.  Its gonna be a great weekend to get out and get the arms and legs moving so we don't incur massive injuries before the season starts.

Also, time to start talking about collecting players fees ($195.00) and waivers.  I have to turn them in in the next couple weeks with roster to have our team be legit.
The Germantown concession stand deal is dead!  We will not be working the stand on the weekend on April 20 & 21st.  We did not have enough folks commit to cover the times they needed.

Guys, I need to firm up the roster and start getting serious about who is playing this year.  The clock is ticking.  I apologize for the lack of email and calls.  I'm a little snowed under at work/travels.  I will be sending out the waiver as soon as I get it.  I will then most likely park myself in the next couple weeks so you can bring to me with money and we can get the Pirates ready to do battle.

Questions?

Gentlemen -

I need a quick answer to two questions.

First, the folks at Germantown want us to work their concession stand on the weekend of April 20th and 21st (Thunder) for an AAU tournament they will be hosting that weekend.  If we're able to pull this off, they will allow us to play our games this season for FREE!  What's in it for you?  David Allison will be able to grant us the dollar value ($550.00) towards team fee and that means we'd all pay less for our player fee!  Could be a savings of 40 to 50 bucks.

We need to have 4 or 5 people to cover in shifts.  We have to cover 8 to 8 on Sat. and 8 to 6 on Sun.  Do me a favor and contact Bobby Blair at 424-5394 or bblair@insightbb.com as soon as possible so we can get this done.  Ask you wife, girlfriend or mistress (just not all three - it would be cramped and akward) to come with you to help fill the spots.  Come on guys you know there's nothing better than the smell of hot dogs, fries and popcorn in the air!  Call Bobby now!

Second, the first practice of the 2013 Pirates will be this Saturday March 23rd at Noon at Des Pres Park (4709 Lowe Road).  This is the same Hikes Point baseball location we have used in the past- directions are on the BLOG).  Time to start loosing up the arms.  We'll work on the legs the next go round.  Let me know if you can make it.  I know March Madness will be ongoing but it's time to start getting ready.

Pirates take BP

John Denney, Rich Mills and David Stierle took batting practice and threw at John's batting cage Saturday afternoon.  The warm, nearly 50° temperature and John's new pitching machine (thanks to John's wife) permitted each of them to get in 50+ swings apiece.

The Pirates open the 2013 season on June 3.

Hey Guys -

I want to let you know that on Saturday February 23rd at 2:00 p.m. at John Denney's indoor facility the Pirates will hold their first of many batting and throwing sessions!  Check the blog for address and direction to John place in Jeffersonville.
[539 Champion Road
Jeffersonville, IN
(next to the Bowles Mattress Co.)]

Now, usually you would have pitchers and catcher report first but in this case everyone is welcome to be there.  I will not be able to participate.  I will be in lovely OK City!

Grab your lumber (easy Doc, I know what you're thinking) and glove and come take swings in the cage and start warming up the arms.

Latest From Leo - February 16th

Good Morning -

Folks it's that time of year where we start the process that leads us to another run towards winning the title in the Louisville MSBL baseball league!

Who is with me?  Hold your hands up.  Higher!  Oh, sorry forgot this is via the interweb!

I'm contacting all of you so we start to put together our team, get in a few practices and get ready to play baseball.  Last year is over and so 2013 gives us a clean slate.  There are some changes that will happen within our league this year.  Here are the highlights that came out of the recent manager's meeting.

Our season starts Sunday June 2, 2013!  That means we have 14 weeks or about 105 days to get our- selves in playing shape, meaning getting our arms loose and legs stronger.  Guys we can't wait until the week before the season starts to get ready to play baseball.  Now is your time to do a little each week to get ready.

This year the 45+ league is beginning.  Like it or not it is happening.  What does this mean?  It means you all are getting older and like it or not you have to realize that and start playing guys our own age.  All the teams from last year are committed to playing again this year.  The exception may be the Red Sox, they're sorting through their issues, duh.

This year it was decided to start the transition to the 45+ age league.  So the league is going to be a combination of the 38+ and 45+ league.  There will be two division just like last year.  The Bluegrass (38+) will be four teams, made up of players 38 and over (can be 37 with birthday this year) and the Fluer De Lis division is four teams, with players 45 and over (can be 44 with birthday this year).  In the 45+ all returning players will be grandfathered in.  However, those under 45 will not be allowed to pitch.

I think with the age of the teams right now, the Bluegrass division will be made up of the Thunder, Orioles, Red Sox and Jets and the Fluer De Lis division will be made up of the Senators, Colonels, Dodgers and Pirates.  We will play teams in our division 4 times and other division 3 times.  So that means a schedule of 22 to 24 games for the season.

Yes, you saw it!  We will remain the Pirates again this season.  Though there was no real animosity to changing the team name it was decided to hold off for another season.  So hopefully you haven't been using your jersey to wax the car or clean up oil spills in the driveway.

Rule changes

All games will be wood bats.
No courtesy runners!  It was decided if you can swing the bat you can run the bases.  The exception is running for catcher with 2 outs.  Bat 10 in batting order (if 10 are present).  If injury occurs and can not bat - no penalty.  However, if player has to leave for work or other reason, an out the first time his turn comes up. If player is ejected - out every time that player bats.
Min. 8 player to start game - Forfeit fee is 115.00.
12 run rule after 4 1/2 innings all games.
Time limits - Tuesday/ Thursday (7 innings) no new inning after 2 hours 30 min.
Sunday (9 innings) no new inning after 2 hours 45 min.

Player fee - $ 190.00

Roster - min of 15 players max is 20 players

We have a new venue this year!  Thanks to Bobby Blair we have worked out an agreement to use the field at Germantown (next to St. X) this year.  This will be where we will play a majority of our weeknight games.  Sunday games will still be at Memorial and some at Clarksville.  The weeknight games other than Germantown will be at Shawnee and Memorial.

Guys, one of the reasons we got the use of this field was a promise that we would not consume alcohol on their property.  They were adamant about this!  Now I'm as guilty as anybody having consumed beer after the games.  Heck sometime I need that beer after putting up with you guys!  But this is being told to us at all of the facilities including Memorial, Shawnee and Clarksville.  We'll just have to find someplace off their property.

Guys it time to get the gear out and start oiling up the glove, find some lumber to swing, start stretching and getting the legs in shape.  I'd like a response from you as to whether you are playing again this year with the Pirates.  Please let me know asap.

Too, I've been in touch with John Denney about using his facility for batting practice.  He has informed me that anytime anyone wants, call him he is ready and willing.  John has a new machine that will save arms.  I will be looking to set up a schedule with him for various nights and times.  Once the weather warms we will have Des Pres and Germantown available for practice.

That's all for now.  Let me know if you have any questions and please let me know of your intent to play or not.  Thanks!
