Pirates Top Colonels

Led by the pitching of Brent Bonte and John Denney, the Pirates defeated the Colonels 12 - 7 Friday night at Germantown.

After Brent struck out the first Colonel batter, a double play after a single (Dustin Stover [ss] to Rich Mills [2b] to Leo Brown [1b]) closed out the top of the first.  The Pirates wasted no time scoring as John Garcia singled, stole second and scored on Jose Cubero's double.  Jose stole third and scored on Leo's RBI ground out.  With the bases empty, Mark Ferguson singled, Dustin reached on an error, Bobby Blair doubled and John D, singled to give the Pirates a 5-0 lead after one.

The Colonels got on the board in the second.  A single, walk, fielder's choice and ground out made the score 5-1.  In the bottom. Dave Porta's single went for naught.

The Colonels cut into the lead in the third.  A lead-off hit batter on an 0-2 count, pop out, walk and double produced a run.  After a walk loaded the bases, a single plated two and the Pirates' lead was cut to one.  That score continued in to the fourth as Leo was called out at the plate on a bad call.

A Colonel base running error in the fourth resulted in an inning ending double play after a one out HPB.

The Pirates then took control.  John Denney led off with a single and stole second!  Then after two outs, the Pirates put together a rally.  Dave Porta reached on an error; Brian Hooper walked; Rich Mills, John G., Jose all had RBI singles; Mark reached on an error; and Dustin doubled (2 RBI) for a 12-4 margin.

In the fifth, the Colonels answered with two runs and left the bases loaded on a double, three singles and a hit batter.  David Stierle's single produced no runs for the Pirates.

In the sixth, the Colonels scored an unearned run in the fifth which the Pirates could not match as John G. was stranded at third after a single and pair of stolen bases.

John D. shut down the Colonels in the seventh, closing the game the way Brent had started it, with a strike out.  Brent got the win
