25+ Mets Stop Pirates

The defending 25 and over League champions, the Mets, beat the Pirates at Thurman-Hutchins 15-3 Sunday (7/22) afternoon.  The Pirates went down in order over the first three innings including six strikeouts.  The Mets were scoreless in the first- a lead-off double being stranded at second against John Denney.  But in the second, the first seven batters reached base with one being retired on a fielder's choice.  Four Mets scored and thee were stranded.  The Mets were shut out in the third and after third the score was 4-0.

The Pirates got on the board in the fourth.  Scotty Irish walked on a 3-2 pitch; Charlie Gabriel singled; Chris Gregory singled, loading the bases; Bill Keeling worked a walk (RBI);  Dustin Stover was hit by a pitch (RBI); and John singled (RBI); cutting the score to 4-3.

But the Pirates failed to score the rest of the way with Leo Brown earning a base on balls; Chris walking; Bobby Blair reaching on an error; and Brent Bronte singling; being the only Pirates to reach base.

The Mets added three in the fourth, five in the fifth, and two in the seventh.

The result does not count in the season standings.

The Pirates resume league play Thursday, July 26 at 7:00 pm at Shawnee against the Pirates.
