Jose Cubero pitched a seven inning complete game shut out Tuesday evening against the Dodgers (visitors) in a 8-0 win that evened the Pirates' record at 1-1.
In the 1st, after a lead-off strike out the Dodgers put a runner on with single. A fielders choice [Brent Bonte (third) to David Stierle (second)] left a runner on first. A walk put runners at first and second. But a ground ball to Brent at third resulted in a tag out of the runner for the third out.
The Pirates struck in the bottom of the inning. Jose walked and Brent was hit by a pitch. After each stole a base. A one out ground out by Jackson Nave scored Jose for a 1-0 lead.
The Dodgers threatened in the 2nd. A lead-off single was erased in a 5-4-3 double play (Brent to David to Jackson). A single and a walk were stranded on a strike out.
In the bottom half, Bobby Blair doubled, Juan Ortiz singled and Leo Brown doubled driving in Bobby. After an out David reached on a HBP to load the bases. A passed ball allowed Juan to score and a bad throw from the catcher allowed Leo to score with David winding up on third. After two innings, the Pirates lead 4-0.
In the 3rd, an error allowed a Dodger base runner but no scoring. The Pirates added one in the bottom. Brent and Chris Gregory walked with Brent scoring when Jackson singled. (5-0)
The Dodgers manged only a lead-off single in the 4th while the Pirates added three runs. Juan singled and Leo and Scotty Irish walked to load the bases with Juan scoring on a passed ball. Jose cleared the bases with a single and the final score of 8-0.
The Dodgers had threats in the 6th and 7th but both were erased by double plays, 1-2-3 (Jose to Scotty to Jackson) and 4-6-3 (David to Bobby to Jackson).
